Heartworm is a parasite that resides in the heart and lungs of infected dogs and cats. Heartworm may be less of a concern in other areas, but it is a very high risk here in the south. It is carried by mosquitoes, which transmit heartworm larvae into the bloodstream of the pet when they bite them. These larvae then develop into adult worms that over time cause heart disease and respiratory problems in dogs. In cats, the signs can be more vague including vomiting, coughing, weight loss and sudden death. Fortunately, this disease is easily preventable by using monthly heartworm prevention year-round. A common misconception is that heartworm prevention is not needed in the winter because there are less mosquitoes. It only takes one bite for your pet to become infected, so it's better safe than sorry! Did you know: You could buy ~7 years worth of prevention for less than the cost of treating your pet one time for heartworms?
